This project explored market acceptance of the potential of allowing producer organizations to design their own, individualized development paths (by creating their own ‘impact plans’) in line with a standard based on principles (rather than mandatory requirements). Enabling Outcomes along with Connective Impact carried out interviews with traders, retailers and brands to assess the potential of this innovative approach to standards.
Caren, working in partnership with Aimee Russillo and with the support of Accreditation Services International (ASI), designed and delivered the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) Theory of Change. The team worked closely with the RSPO secretariat and executed a process that included extensive stakeholder participation and engagement with the Board of Governors. The team also delivered the foundations of an M&E system to support the new Theory of Change.

Enabling Outcomes was called upon to define roles and responsibilities of the Standards, Certification & Impact Team, identify skill sets, and shortlist candidates to build out the team. Additional support included providing certification insight and writing the 2014 Impact Report. Most recently, we were called upon to support a review of the complaints mechanism.
Enabling Outcomes works with a high street retailer to improve the partnerships and monitoring and evaluation of their ethical trade projects portfolio. Work has included a deep-dive evaluation of a grantee that delivers training on life skills and worker rights to workers in the garment sector in India, research on grievance hotlines, partnership meeting facilitation, and KPI development.
Enabling Outcomes conducted the midterm evaluation of Twin’s Maanda Project (funded by Comic Relief). The project aims to serve seven East African coffee cooperatives across four countries–Rwanda, DRC, Uganda and Malawi–as a holistic project that encompasses quality, financial management, governance, certification, marketing and sustainable agriculture with gender as a cross-cutting theme. The evaluation included field visits and market partner interviews, reflecting on performance to date and recommendations for improvements.
With financial support from the Aspen Network for Development Entrepreneurs’ (ANDE) Catalyst Fund, Caren worked with the team at Enclude to conduct a pilot of its Gender Benchmarking Tool with financial institutions. Caren supported the refinement of the tool’s scorecard which assesses performance of a financial institution vis-a-vis the national market potential to serve women customers.
